Careers in Fashion

Fashion is a mode of expression that includes clothing, footwear and accessories. It reflects a person’s personality, social class and status. Fashion trends come and go, but classic styles never lose their appeal. Fashion is an art that is constantly changing and evolving, just like the people who wear it.

It is often assumed that changes in fashion reflect a general change in society or the financial interests of designers and manufacturers, but this may not always be the case. For example, research has shown that the fashion for long hair was motivated by the desire to emulate the sexy looks of a particular pop star, even though Farrah Fawcett was already deceased by the time this trend took hold.

The fashion industry encompasses the design, production and marketing of apparel, footwear and accessories. Its products are marketed through fashion shows, magazines, newspapers, television and the internet. The fashion business’s global network supports many jobs in textile production, garment manufacturing and retailing.

A career in fashion requires excellent creative and conceptual skills along with a strong knowledge of market and consumer behavior. The ability to visualize and create new designs and product lines is also essential. A strong understanding of the 4 P’s – Product, Price, Place and Promotion is needed to be successful in the fashion industry. For those who are interested in pursuing a fashion design career, a bachelor’s degree in fashion is a good starting point.
